I am a descendant of Rayburn McDonald Hastings through his daughter, Etta (1880 Franklin Co, TX census), my grandmother. My research is still very much a work-in-progress as there is very little documentation, other than the census reports.

My research goes back to 1850 in Chickasaw Co, MS where he is found in the household of John Killingsworth: Mary Daniel 31, Rubin M. Hastings 6 and Susan E. Daniel 2. There is the illusive Indian blood in our line and it is speculated that it must be through Mary rather than the Hastings line. I do not know Mary’s connection to the Killingsworth family. It is assumed that John Rayburn Hastings is deceased by 1850, Mary has married a “Daniel” and had a child Susan Emaline Daniel.

The 1844 Tax Rolls in Chickasaw Co. MS lists Hastings, John, Joseph and John R.
1845 Personal Roll, Chickasaw Co. MS Hastings, Jno. R, Joseph, Jno. H and F.M.
1848 Land Roll Chickasaw Co MS Hastings: John R, J.H., F.M., Joseph
1848 Chickasaw Co. Hastings, F.M. Wm. T.
Sheriff’s Book (undated after 1840 and before 1850) Hastings: F. M., Wm. T, J. H.
1851 Hastings: Wm. T, John H.
By 1852 the Hastings are no longer in Chickasaw Co. MS. The year of 1848 is the last record for John R. Hastings but he was not found on a Mortality Schedule. (This information was copied from books at the beginning of my research and the source is not given.)

Capt. F. M. Hastings obituary states that he is the son of Joseph Hasting. It was assumed that my Rayburn McDonald Hastings was Capt. F. M. Hastings’ nephew. At any rate, my Rayburn McDonald Hastings migrated to the same county or an adjacent county (MS, MO, TX) as Capt. F. M. Hastings. The last county was Franklin Co. TX where Capt. F. M. Hastings is buried. If you have not seen it, there is an interesting story of Harriet (Irby) Hastings’ trip to Franklin Co. TX to meet Capt. Hastings after the Civil War.

The “Craig” and “Hall” children listed on the 1910 and 1920 census reports of Wood and Rains Co. TX are children of Rayburn McDonald Hastings’ daughter Susie May (Susan) (Hastings) Craig-Hall.

Rayburn McDonald Hastings had two sons. Joseph Rayburn (Joe) Hastings married Bertha Ann (Annie) Langford and had a son: J. B. Hastings. Claude E. (Esterson?) Hastings married Ethel Jobe and they had three sons. These two families migrated to West Texas.

Hopefully this information will be helpful.
