Raburn McDonald Hastings, s. of John Raburn Hastings

John Raburn Hastings, born 15 Oct 1818 (eldest son of John Holloway Hastings and first wife Margaret "Peggy" Gentry), purportedly married 1) Sarah Davidson on 29 August 1842, but where is not stated. They supposedly had a daughter Susan Frances Catherine Hastings, born 28 May 1843, with mother Sarah dying three months later on 31 August 1843, "in child bed fever." Did daughter Sarah also die at or soon after birth?

John Raburn Hastings purportedly married 2) Mary J. "Polly" Burt purportedly on 12 June 1844, presumably in Mississippi. They had one assumed child, Raburn McDonald Hastings, born 15 July 1845, but no further data has traditionally been provided.

All manner of attempts to find the family of John Raburn Hastings in the 1850 census failed. In the following, this writer prefers the term "household" versus the term "family" as used in the actual census; perhaps merely semantics, but not all persons enumerated at a single dwelling in the various censuses were always related.

In the 30 June 1860 enumeration of Polk Twp, Dade County, MO, p. 61, line 13, dwelling and household 413, indexed and written as "Hastin", one find:

Daniels, Mary, 44, F, [blank], $---, $75, Miss.
Hastin, Raburn, 15, M, Farmer, Miss.
-----, Emaline, 12, F, Miss.

Hence, John Raburn Hastings was apparently deceased by June 1860 but two children by second wife Mary. Then in the 6 July 1870 enumeration of Ozark Twp, Lawrence County, MO (Mt. Vernon P.O.), p. 24, line 22, dwelling 174 and household 173, indexed as "Revern" Hastings, are:

Hastings, Raburn, 25, M, Farmer, $---, $200, Miss., CNR&W.
-----, Mary, 55, F, Keeping house, TN, CNR&W.
-----, Emeline, 20, F, Miss., CNR&W.

One would presume that Mary Daniels in the 1860 census was Mary (Burt) (Hastings) Daniels, the mother of two Hastings children, son Raburn and daughter Emeline. However, all three are enumerated in 1860 census under the surname Hastings - perhaps the Daniels surname in 1860 is an error. Nonetheless, two months later on 11 September 1870 Raburn McDonald Hastings md. Elizabeth Johnson at Lawrence Co., MO (Missouri Marriages, 1851-1900). While one would assume that wife Elizabeth was from Missouri, this was not the case.

In the 11 June 1880 enumeration of Justice Precinct 4, Franklin County, TX, ED 34, p. 19, beginning at line 20, households 173-176, are the following four separate and sequential households, the children not shown here except for household 176:

173: Hastings, Francis M., M, 57, Self, Md., Farmer, TN, NC, KY.
-----, Harriet, F, 56, Wife, Md., Keeping house, TN, TN, TN.

They above are Capt. Francis Marion Hastings and wife Harriet Jane Irby. They are folklowed by two of their married daughters: 174, the divorced Frances Melandie (Hastings) Nichols and her son; 175 is the widow Sarah J. "Sallie" (Hastings) Jones and four children.

The immediate following household 176 is that of Raburn McDonald Hastings and his wife Elizabeth Johnson. It took awhile to figure this out as Capt. Hastings had no known son born prior to 1850, which is clearly depicted in the census of 1850 and 1860 for Capt. Hastings' family. Nonetheless, in 1880 Raburn Hastings was residing within the immediate vicinity, if not next door, to his 22 year older 1st cousin once removed:

Hastings, Rubon, M, 35, Self, Md., Farmer, Miss., TN, AL.
-----, Elizabeth, F, 27, Wife, Md., Keeping house, Miss., AL, AL.*
-----, Susan, F, 5, Dau, TX, MS, TX.
-----, Etta, F, 2, Dau, TX, MS, TX.
Rose, Dolly, F, 21, Sis-in-law, Wid., Boarder, TX, TX, TX.
-----, Mc, M, 4, Son [Dolly's], Boarder, TX, TX, TX.
-----, Billy, M, 1/12 (one month old?), Son [Dolley's], TX, TX, TX.
Lawson, Walter, M, 22, Single, Laborer, MS, MS, MS.

In the subsequent 19 June 1900 enumeration of Justice Precinct 4, Van Zandt County, TX, ED 132, sheet 12B, line 69, dwelling and household 217, indexed as "Babern" Hastings but written as shown, are:

Hastings, Rabern, Head, M, July 1853 (sic), 46 (sic), Md. 30 yrs, MS, AL, TN, Farmer.
-----, Sarah E., Wife, F, Jan 1852, 48, Md. 30 yrs., 10 born-5 liv., TX, TN, TN.
-----, Claudie, Son, M, June 1888, 11, TX, MS, TX.
-----, Marny, Dau, F, Jan 1895, 5, TX, MS, TX.
-----, Joe, Son, M, May 1898, 2, TX, MS, TX.

In the 21 April 1910 enumeration of Justice Precinct 2, Wood County, TX, ED 126, sheet 6A, line 21, dwelling and household 64, indexed and written as shown, are:

Hastings, Rayburn M., Head, M, 64, Md.1 for 39 yrs, MS, AL, AL, Home Farmer.
-----, Elizabeth, Wife, F, 58, Md.1 for 39 yrs., 10 born-5 liv., TX, TN, TN, none.
-----, Claude E., Son, M, 22, Single, TX, MS, TX, farm laborer.
-----, Golden M., Dau, F, 15, TX, MS, TX, none.
-----, Joseph R., Son, M, 12, TX, MS, TX, home farm laborer.
Hall, May S., Head, F, 33, Md.2 for 6 yrs, 9 born-6 liv., TX, MS, TX, Own income. *
Craig, Henry M., Son, M, 16, Single, TX, TX, TX, Farm laborer.
-----, Willie Lee, Son, M, 14, TX, TX, TX, Farm laborer.
-----, Marvin E., Son, M, 12, TX, TX, TX.
-----, Luther, Son, M, 9, TX, TX, TX.
Hall, Paul B., Son, M, 4, TX, TX, TX.
-----, Mary E., Dau, F, 6/12, TX, TX, TX.

* Eldest dau. May Susan Hastings, enumerated as Susan in her parent's 1880 household.

In the 26 January 1920 enumeration of Justice Precinct 1, Rains County, TX, ED 150, sheet 12B, line 88, dwelling 360 household 365, indexed as "Raybome" but written as shown, are:

Hastings, Rayborne, Head, M, 75, Md., MS, AL, TN, Farmer (owner).
-----, Elizabeth, Wife, F, 69, Md., TX, MO, TN, none.
Hall, Paul, GrdChild, M, 14, TX, TX, TX, farm work.
-----, Mary, GrdChild, F, 11, TX, TX, TX, none.
-----, May, GrdChild, F, 5, TX, TX, TX, none.

Followed at line 93, dwelling 361 and household 366, by:

Hasting (sic), Joe, Head, M, 22, Md., TX, MS, MS, farmer (owner)
-----, Annie, Wife, F, 18, Md., TX, TX, TX, none.

Son Joe, enumerated as Joseph R. in the family's 1900 census, was Joseph "Joe" Rayburn Hastings, whose WWI draft registration card showns the following:

Name: Joe Rayburn Hastings
Rains County, TX
Birth Date: 14 Oct 1898
Race: White
Roll: 1983579
As of 12 September 1918, he was 19 years old, single, missing his right eye, living at Emory, Rains County, TX. He worked for and stated that his nearest relative was his father. He signed as Joe Raborn Hastings.

No corresponding WWI draft registration card for Raburn and Elizabeth Hastings' son Claude E. Hastings can be found and he cannot be located in the census after 1910. Thus, on its face it would appear that Raburn McDonald Hastings was the sole surviving descendant line of John Raburn Hastings, the grandson of John Hastings who died testate at Franklin County, TN in 1830.

Did Joseph Raburn Hastings and wife Annie leave male descendants or did the entire line "daughter out"?

Can anyone add to this information?
