More on the Hassards....
My mom has pulled some of the info we have, which includes some pages from a book written & published by my grandfather's great-grandfather (Henry Hassard) in 1858 entitled "History & Genealogy of the Hassards."There are also several family crests in addition to the one w/ scallops (featuring bizarre looking animals).Mom thought the family motto was "vive en espoire," but some of them seem to say "sinceritas."
Also, at odds w/ John Hassard's bit of information about King Rollo of Norway, we have that at the time of the Conquest (i.e., William the Conquerer), the family was living on the borders of Switzerland & was distinguished by the ancient but long extinct title of Dude de Charante. Two bearing this title visited the Holy Land as crusaders...., etc.
Lastly, my grandfather's grandfather, also Henry Hassard-- I think the one who came to California from England, had 10 children. So that accounts for some of the many Hassards in California, including John who wrote the article about camping & won the Dipsea race 2ce, James, etc.
If anyone is really interested in this stuff, I can try to get together what we have, make some photocopies & send out...
Best regards,
Nina
