Edward,
After I entered the forum I was really puzzled by my grandma's recolection of events, so digged up a little bit more and found that Charles Haslam Burton (in Nicaragua as in the rest of the spanish world both lastnames from father and mother are kept) was born in Nicaragua from James Haslam and Sara Burton, James is the one I was not able to track down earlier than 1848, when he was a witness to a wedding in the US, both books where I found his name point that he came from the US. My grandma always thought her granfather was British because he used to carry a British passport, but that I have not been able to confirm either.
