Barry:I'm not researching Harwoods per se:I am interested because my ancestor Robert Blackwell appeared in New York in 1676 about the same time as another merchant, Jacob Harwood. My ancestor had a son Jacob, and another named Francis.A Francis Blackwell was a separatist leader and part of the Pilgrim group in Holland. His congregation was to have settled in Virginia in 1620, where William Harwood was the governor of a small colonly, the fate of which is described in the book "Martin's Hundred.A shareholder in that company was Sir Edward Harwood who was born 1n 1586 in Thurlby, Lincolnshire according to Betty Harwood's information at her family tree maker site. This is another of many coincidences for me, since Thomas Thurlby, whose name may come from that town or vice versa, and who was Bishop of Ely and of Westminister, was a "cousin" of one of my possible ancestors, William Blackwell, the clerk of London from 1539 to about 1570.You have to remember that in England's ranks of gentlemen and higher, manors were granted or bought and sold in widely dispersed locations, so that branches of families might appear in distant locations from each other.
