Jonathan Harwood 9/9/1748 Sturbridge MA & more info
I am looking for the ancestors of Jonathan Harwood, born 9/9/1748 in Sturbridge, MA.Sturbridge wasn’t even settled until 1729, so the family apparently came from elsewhere.
Jonathan married Mary Witt (born 4/27/1748 in Marlborough), whose father was David Witt (born 4/11/1720 also in Marlborough), who descended from John Witt, John Witt Jr., and John Witt, all of Lynn (1679, 1645 & 1612 (?) respectively), who descended from Jacob Witt of 1589 somewhere across the pond in mother England.
Jonathan had a son David Harwood, born 8/28/1772 in Sturbridge.David’s son was Franklin Harwood, born 1807 in Plainfield, NY.
My father told me Franklin’s father died during the War of 1812, leaving Franklin an orphan, but he didn’t know who David was at the time he told me that.In fact, he knew nothing of Franklin, other than his name. That was all just word of mouth passed down through the family. It turns out David died in 1815, so there may be something to that story.
David married Margaret Morse in 1796, who was from Stafford, Ct.Other siblings [children of Jonathan and Mary] included Betsey-1774, Jonathan-1776, Henry-1780, Mary-1781 and Asa-1783, all of Sturbridge.
Franklin begot Charles Edwin Harwood of 1845 in Waterloo, NY (later home to Memorial Day), who begot Claude Rowley Harwood of 1877 in Fairport, NY.
There was also a Jonathan born 1749 in Sutton and another 1748 in Salem.I don’t believe my Jonathan is the Sutton or Concord line, but may be Salem line, as David, Jonathan and John are popular family “given” names.
I’m guessing Jonathan descends from Henry and Elizabeth Harwood who arrived in Boston aboard a Winthrop Fleet vessel in 1630.Elizabeth was apparently with child, as John was born upon arrival in 1630.John married Emma and they procreated John Jr-1660, Jonathan-1662 (apparently both were infant deaths), John Jr (2nd)-1664, Jonathan (2nd)-1666, David-1668 and Alice 1672.
Jonathan (2nd) married Rebecca Twiss and, in Salem, procreated Jonathan-1704, Lydia-1705 [I’m showing she was born in Sutton, but suspect that’s a typo], Ebenezer-1705 (no rest for poor Rebecca!), David-1708, John-1709 and Joseph-1711.John and Joseph married the Pease sisters (Hannah and Ruth), while David married Elizabeth Stearns and Jonathan married Sarah Boyce. My guess is that my Jonathan was the son of one of these folk’s, as most married in mid to late 1730’s.
Can anyone help connect the dots?
George Harwood
