Can any one in the group put me straight when it comes to the true spelling of the surname Harwood/Horwood. One so called person in Australia seems to think I have spelt his name incorrectly, but my research which is more detailed than his proves otherwise.
I have the father Nicholas Horwood born in Devon, England, circa 1774, possibly to the parents of John and Jane Horwood also of Devon. I say possibly, cause I don't wish to go further back than the father in this case. Nicholas Horwood of West Down was married to Grace Bynon in Barnstable, Devon on December 17 1803. During their marriage I found they had a daughter called Ann Harwood (note the spelling of the surname) who was married to William Brewer at Portsea, Hampshire in 1821. The also had two sons, one was called George Harwood and the other Edmund Horwood (note the spelling) The latter was born, married and died as a Horwood were the former, George, was baptised Harwood, married as a Horwood and died as a Harwood. In the census returns of 1871-81 he was listed as a Horwood. In his will and probate he is listed as a Horwood. In his Royal Navy career, and the medals he received in action during the Crimea, and later on in the merchant service he was listed as a Horwood. What then is his true surname?
It's worth noting that his parents were buried in Portsea, Hampshire, as a Horwood, the memorial headstone proves this out. However, the parents are listed in the Birth, Marriages and Deaths as a Harwood. I may add that the BMD are not reliable in some cases. They are only as good as the information that the informant passed on. In this instance the age of death of George Harwood in 1888 was in error. The census of 1871-81 showed he was born about 1820-24, but the death certificate showed 1832. The baptism record and later sailings on board the CSS Southerner, merchant shipping and Royal Naval records show it to be 1819. With this partial information that I have supplied, can anyone suggest what the real surname of this family is?
