Hi Carol,

This isn't my direct line but I collect all info on the various spellings of our name Harwell/Harvell/Harvel/Harvill/Harvil/Harville

I checked my files and found I have your James but I don't have much more info than what you have. I show him in the 1880 Calhoun Co., MS census. BTW, this census has him born in Louisiana and Sarah in AL and all the children born in MS. I do think Sarah is his second wife since she was born 1842 and is some 21 years younger than James and some of the children from your Bible record were born as early as 1848. So perhaps in Alabama you might find James and another wife in marriage records. And, if true, Sarah & James would have married in Mississippi. Also please note, the 1880 census has the son,George, born in 1852 rather than 1857.

Did any of the older children of James live beyond 1913? If so, there would be a Death Certificate in the state where they died and it would have the names of the parents and where they were born. You would know for certain the name of the first wife. A small fee and the proper application sent to the state would be all you need to do.
Well, I just checked the 1910 census and James W. was alive in Calhoun Co., MS with wife Mary J. James' two nieces, Willie May and Sarah L. were living with he and his wife, Mary J. Hopefully he lived four more years and there is a death certificate for you to get.

Have you found James in the 1850 census? I looked in MS and I didn't find one in the index that would fit. When I looked in AL I found a James but much ealier birth ...1807... in Cherokee Co.

Wish I could help you more but maybe if you could find a marriage record for James & a first wife, that would help or the Death Certificate for James W.

Ann
