After combining several sources and messages in the Harwell, Harvell and Harville forums and other sites I may be able to shed some light on this part of the family.
I believe George C. Harvell/Harville/Harwell was the son of James J. Harwell who was in the Gwinett County census of 1820 and who died there about 1826 leaving widow Elizabeth (Doss) and several children. Among these were sons Thomas H., James J.; George C.: and Sanford W. Harwell, and severaldaughters.
James appears to be a son of Thomas Harwell who was in Columbia, SC from about 1767 until his death in 1808. Past that it gets a little speculative but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that indicates Thomas was a brother of my ancestor William Harwell who was in Wake County, NC from about 1772 thru 1802 and then moved to Oglethorpe County, GA.
I believe James had previously married Sarah (Jarrett) Carter. He married Elizabeth Doss in 1812.
Some records re this are:
Mar 16, 1835 - Inferior Court Minutes, Gwinnett Co., GA
BENJAMIN MANNINGobtained letters of guardianship for JAMES J. HARWELL.
Feb 23, 1837 - Gwinnett Co.
THOMAS HARWELL married SARAH SELL
Jan 1839 - Inferior Court Minutes, Gwinnett Co., GA
JOHN P. HUTCHINS obtained letters of guardianship for GEORGE C. HARVEL and SANFORD W. HARWELL.
Aug 11, 1846 JOHN P. HUTCHINS seeks attachment on lands of GEORGE C. HARVEL.
Anyone wishing more on this should e-mail me directly.
