The county history for Van Wert Co. showed that David Smith was b. abt 1826 in Washington Co., PA and raised in Franklin Co.I do not know who his parents were tho'.He and Mary A. Hartzog were m. 7 Feb 1849 in Van Wert Co., OH.Mary was b. 7 Feb 1831 Fairfield Co., OH or Berks Co., PA.She d. 15 Aug 1874-76.Their children were b. in Willshire,Van Wert Co.Dates of b. are approximate - guestimated from census:John H. Smith b. abt 1851, Eliza H. or W. Smith b. abt 1854-56, Clara A. Smith b. abt 1861, King B. Smith b. abt 1863, and Barbara M. Smith b. abt 1873.King is the surname of Mary's mother. The initial "B" may stand for Benjamin, the name of her brother and cousin. The initial "H" may stand for Hartzog. They had 5 out of 8 children who wereliving at the time of the writing of the co. hist. - publ. 1882.David was a teacher and farmer. In 1870 they had $5000 in real estate per census.Mary had $1000 real estate as an inheritance from her parents in 1850.I took info from census of 1850 thru 1880.
I hope this helps.I am at a standstill on Mary (Polly) Smith who m. Eli Zimmerman. All I know is that they m. in Fayette Co., OH, lived in IN, and the Zimmerman farm in Black Creek Twp., Mercer Co., OH - just across the St. Mary's River from Willshire, Van Wert Co. - was the farm of this Eli or his son Eli.Eli and Polly's son John Zimmerman m. Leah Hartzog and they were my ancestors.Polly is supposed to have been b. in VA, so is probably unrelated to David Smith since he was from PA.Beyond that I am stuck - If she just had a one-of-a-kind surname, I would be more likely to pick up the trail in VA.Aa-a-argh!
