Just saw your request for info re Horty family. My Mother was born Eileen Hoarty. I am also descended from a Patrick Horty from Co Galway. His son Thomas B.1824 emigraged to england prior to 1855. My research shows that the name originates from the area around Gort,Co Galway. The name is spelt either Horty or Hoarty.Tradition in my mothers family was that the family descended from a survivor of the spanish Armada. During correspondence with a gentleman from the area who also descends from the Horty's I was informed that the family had existed in Cloughnacava,Galway from the 13th Century and many are buried at Killmacduagh.Tradition in the area ia that they are descendants of shipwrecked Polish or Germans. Personally I feel that the name is a corruption of Mageraghty which is mag hOrtaigh in the original irish.Although in my own family a least one record lists the name as Harty I do not think they are the same name It is only in English language records they alternate in Galway and among irish speakers the name is considered seperate. I am assured that the name is Hoarty. There is a Hoartys Well in county Clare just over the county border from Galway. Hope this helps you.
