I read your posting today with interest. I am researching the family of my husband's 3rd great-grandfather John A. Hartwick, born about 1791 in New York State. I have not been able to locate his parents or his exact place of birth.

John A. Hartwick married Mary Ann Kelly (probably born in Canada - she was possibly the daughter of David Kelly and Mary Babcock from Orange Co., NY). Their children were born in Camden East Twp., Lennox & Addington Co.

Their son Samuel Hartwick who married Catherine Trotter, (my husband's 2nd great-grandparents), moved to Arden, Frontenac Co., ON. My husband and I visited the old Hartwick homestead in Ontario last summer, all that remains are the some of the stones from the foundation of the old barn that burned.

Some of the information you've given in your posting does seem to match what I have for my husband's ancestors. I believe that George Hartwick who married Roseanna Thompson, was a son of John A. Hartwick and his wife Mary Ann Kelly.

I have in my files that George Hartwick married Roseanna Thompson and they moved to Huron Co., ON where they lived for awhile before moving to Saginaw, Michigan where they both died.

1881 Canadian Census - George Hartwick/Roseanna & family:

Is this your George Hartwick and family? If not, I am now very confused about your reference to George Hartwick who married Rosanna Thompson. How does George fit into this same Hartwick family?

I also found the marriage record for Edward Hartwick that you mention (spelled Harterick) to Harriet Asher. Here is the record taken from Ancestry.CA records:

Information that I've found posted on Ancestry family trees shows that there was a John Hartwick born abt 1800 who died Cass City, Michigan. Was his father John Hartwick born abt 1775 New York State who later married Eunice Waters? If so, John 1775 may have been married before and had a son John Hartwick born abt 1800 (married (1) Mary Cook then (2) Phoebe McConnell) or a John A. Hartwick born abt 1791 in NY who married Mary Ann Kelly? Or did John Hartwick born 1775 have a brother who was the father to John A. Hartwick born abt 1791 NY State? My husband's Hartwick's are of German descent, as most of these families seem to be, so I feel there may possibly be a connection somewhere. Also, many of the Hartwick's seemed to live in various parts of Frontenac Co., ON at some point in time.

I think nephew George Hartwick may be the son of Wm Hartwick and Mary Jane Peters (William Hartwick was son of John Hartwick and Phoebe McConnell), and nephew George Hartwick later married Lavina J. (Hannah) Cox, widow, Born Ontario, CAN, d/o John Hannah and Sarah Steel.

Their marriage record:

(2) Son Charles Waters Hartwick married (1) Frances ?? b. abt 1822 Ireland died abt 1851 Ontario and (2) Martha Hannah born abt 1841, daughter of William Hannah and Mary ??. Charles Waters Hartwick and Hannah were married May 1.1860 Prescott, Grenville Co., ON.

The information below was taken from a family tree on Ancestry:

John Hartwick b. abt 1800 first married Mary Cook about 1823 and George Gilbert Hartwick was born abt 1824 in Jefferson Co, NY and died abt 1912 Cass City, Michigan

John Hartwick b. abt 1800 then married Phoebe McConnell and they had these children:

1. William Hartwick b. abt 1836 Loborough, Frontenac Co., ON married Mary Jane Peters, d/o Elias John Peters and Lucinda Keller.

2. John Hartwick b. abt 1837

3. Charlotte Hartwick b. abt 1838 USA (her birth place stated as USA on their marriage record), married Aberhart Vankoughnet on May 12.1863 in Loborough, Frontenac. Charlotte was living in Loborough at this time.

4. Edward Hartwick b. 1839 Loborough, married Harriet Asher (per your information and the marriage record I found)

5. Emma Hartwick b. abt 1843 Loborough

6. James M. Hartwick b. abt 1844 Loborough married Mary Elizabeth Wyatt from Portland Twp., Frontenac Co. James is said to have died in Newberry, Luce, Michigan, USA. Death place for Elizabeth is unknown.

If anyone has any information to shed some light on my confusion, it would be greatly appreciated. It would be great to make more Hartwick family connections, if in fact these Hartwick families are related.

Thanks, Audrey
