James are you able to get a birth reg. or death reg. for your grandfather- either one should tell names of his parents and that will help immensely. In Michael's message #165 he states name of a baby who died whose father was Allan Hartrick (Hartrick seems to be a derivative of Hartwick) who was born at Lindsay, Ontario, most likely about 1900 or before.
This Allan's wife was Frances- were these your great grandparents do you think? The given name Allan is passed on in this Hartwick family. I do have files for Hartwick family out of Camden in L & A County that go back to John A. Hartwick and Mary Ann Kelly- John was born in USA about 1791. The "A" in his name could stand for Allan or Artemus.
I suspect that the Allan that Michael has mentioned who was married to "Frances" is John Allen or Allan Hartwick born May 15, 1889 in Lindsay, Victoria County, Ont. and was the son of William Allen Hartwick and Fanny Theresa Walker; William Allen Hartwick (born about 1868?) was a son of John Allen Hartwick (1833-1900) & Jane Baptist(e), and John was a son of previously mentioned John Hartwick & Mary Ann Kelly.
If either of you has any new info, would you please let me know? It would be great to tie you to this Hartwick line, James!
