In the 1871 census, 2 Hartwicks: Arthur, age 39, bn ON, a carpenter, lives in Lindsay Twp, Victoria Co. Also in Lindsay is John Hartwick, age 36, a labourer. Arthur is found on p 51 & John on p 60.
On 16 Sep 1920, aged 1 day, Earl Stanley Hartrick died. His father is Allan Hartrick, born Lindsay, Victoria Co; his mother is Frances X, born Newmarket. They live at 10 Henderson Ave in Toronto.
I suspect that the name should correctly be Hartwick if the 1871 census is correct, given the father's birthplace.
However, also in the 1871 census is listed in Frontenac Co, Frontenac Ward, John Hartwick, aged 34, bn IR. His surname is correctly Hartrick [revealed to mine eyes clearly in a filmed example of the document].
The Hartrick surname arrived in Chinguacousy Twp as early as 1820, perhaps from NY, but certainly from Co Wexford, IR where it was planted in 1709. It arrived in Pickering Twp at least by 1827. Another set arrived in Frontenac Co about 1860. Another [single] arrived in Que & removed eventually to Glengarry Co. Henrietta Hartrick was born 1830 on Prince Edward Island [d 1872 in Toronto].
Excepting an instance in an 1865 B & S document wherein John Hartrick, dentist, practicing in Toronto, is listed as John Hartwick, the census listing & the death cert listing are the only instances so far known of confusion between Hartwick & Hartrick. The principal other forms have been Hatrick or Hattrick.
