Hartwells who became Wickes/Weeks

A Mary/Marie Hartwell of VA, widow, who became pregnant by Joseph Weeks of Kent Island, MD ca. 1656 moved with her two chn., Mary Harwell and Joseph Hartwell to Kent Island in 1656. About that same time Joseph Weeks married Mary Hartwell. Joseph had been married when he got Hartwell pregnant,so one could assume that this wife had passed.

In 1671 Mary Gouldhawke makes her will in which she names her father Joseph Weeks, sister Rachel Weeks and brother Joseph Weeks. What is entirely possible is that Mary and Joseph Hartwell were adopted by their Step Father Joseph Weeks at a young age. Since Mary Gouldhawke was pregnant at the time of her Will it is fair to assume that she was born early 1650's and maybe Joseph as well. Rachel may have been the bastard child, but that is not proven either. Joseph Weeks lost a child,Joseph Weeks, in 1656 who may have been a child by his prior marriage.

We know that there was a Joseph Weeks who d. ca. 1675 in Kent MD, since there was an inventory taken of his possessions. We also know that a Joseph Weeks was married to a daughter of Thomas Hynson who d. 1668. Joseph Weeks was married probably to Ann Hynson as late as 1673 when he is mentioned in the estate of Thomas Hynson. It is reasonable to assume that Joseph and Ann had chn. and it is possible that the Joseph Weeks who is found in Westmoreland VA is in fact one of those chn.

The bottom line is that Mary Gouldhawke d. 1674 and Joseph Weeks who d. 1675 may have been Hartwells and not Weeks', which is troubling at best. Any chn. that Mary and Joseph may have had are in fact Hartwells and not Weeks'. Joseph Weeks of Westmoreland who m. a Blagdon and Pope could be Joseph Hartwell instead.

If any of you have done any DNA investigation this may be something to look for.
