Hartwell/Swan/Vantine connection

I would be very grateful if anyone can give me some information that might help me unravel a mystery that I have not been able to solve. In the late 1700's and early 1800's there was a Dr Samuel Swan of Somerset County, NJ. Dr swan was an MD as well as sheriff of Somerset County, and he served in Congress about 12 years representing the Somerset County area. He was married to Aletta Degroot of Bound Brook, NJ. Their daughter Eliza married an attorney from Somerville, NJ by the name of Thomas Hartwell about 1800. My Great Grandmother was named Aletta "Swan" Vantine (she was daughter of Archibald Vantine and Catherine Castner). Aletta had a brother named "Thomas Hartwell" Vantine. Why did Archibald and Catherine give a daughter the middle name "Swan", and a son first and middle names "Thomas Hartwell"? It would seem there must have been a connection to the Swan and Hartwell families. That is the mystery --- what was the connection of the Vantine's to the Swan and Hartwell families? Any comments are welcome. Thank you for any light you might be able to shed on this.
