Hartsook Family Genealogy Forum
Both my uncle, Leroy Eugene Hartsock, and my cousin, Mary Mae Hartsough, had Peter arriving in America in 1752. This does not fit with records contained in the Janeway Ledgers of New Jersey and records of the First Reformed Church in Raritan (now Somerville), New Jersey. These records wer found by Howard Dale Hartough, Jr., who it turns out is another cousin from a different branch.
The Janeway Ledgers show that Margaret Herzog/Hertzog and her children, Peter, Handrick, Zacharias and Elizabeth were living in the mountains of western New Jersey in the early 1700s, close to or with a family by the name of Kones/Koontz/Kuntz. The records of the First Reformed Church show that Peter and Anna Margaretha Kones/Kuntz/Koontz had 7 children baptized their from 1733 until 1750. These childrens names and years/dates of birth coincide wtih those passed down through our family.
Mr. Hartough stated that there is a suit in the Archives of New Jersey that shows Handrick (the yoounger brother) suing Peter (the older brother) in 1750. Peter soon after moved to Frederick County, Maryland. Zachariah (the middle brother) suuposedly moved to Pennsylvania and his descendants lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Michigan, etc. This branch of the family is related to General George Hartsuff of Civil War fame.
