John Walker, NJ, Godfrey's father-in-law

I have been working on the family of Katherine Hartsfield, Godfrey's wife. As most of us know, John Walker gave land along the Penshoakin (Pennsauken) Creek in what was then Waterford Twp., Gloucester Co., NJ, to Godfrey and Katherine Hartsfield around 1710.

The NJ Archives contain the record of the marriage of John Walker to Mary Smith, daughter of John Smith, weaver, of Amwelbury, Salem County, NJ, on 2/19/1683-4. Because of this record, I have been researching the wills and land records of John Smith's family. John Walker helped inventory and administer the estates of John Smith and his two sons. However, today I received a copy of Cook's often-quoted article on this family from a 1959 issue of American Genealogy, and it stated that John Walker, husband of Mary Smith, died testate in Salem in March, 1704/5, having been widowed and remarried since 1694, and that his will mentions children John (under age), Elizabeth, and an unborn child, all Quakers - but no Katherine and no Sarah.

Salem County is just south of Gloucester County, NJ. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, Burlington County was the next county to the north. John Walker also received a legacy from a Quaker named Smith who died in Burlington County. A John Walker was appointed to mark the trees for the survey dividing Burlington and Gloucester Counties in 1684, along the Pennsauken Creek in the area of the land gifted to Godfrey and Katherine.

At this point, I am wondering if there were two John Walkers, both having sons named John, in this part of NJ at the time: one - "our" John Walker - living along the Pennsauken Creek between Gloucester and Burlington Counties, and the other - the one married to Mary Smith - living in Salem County and dying before the gift of land to Godfrey and Katherine.

Has anyone researched this line? If so, I would very much appreciate your opinion on these issues. Also, if anyone has copies of the land records whereby John Walker the Elder and the Younger gave land to Godfrey and Katherine Hartsfield, I would very much appreciate your input. I have only seen abstracts and understand that the land transfers took place in 1710 or 1712. I am working on getting a copy of the will of John Walker of Salem Co.

Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

Debbie Carter
