Mr. Moore,
I am curious about the connection between the Hartsfield and McElroy lands in what is now Clayton County, Georgia and Phillip FitzGerald's "Tara". Which Hartsfields owned some of this land before Phillip FitzGerald? I found in my records of the Henry County tax lists for 1852, 1854, 1855, and 1857 some Hartsfield ownership of Lots 42, 43, 49, and 144 in District 12, Henry County for James Hartsfield and his two sons, William and James H. Hartsfield (this William is not the William who married Pellatiah McElroy) but only have the deed abstracts through 1851. Most of District 12 became part of Clayton County in 1858 (I have not yet researched Clayton County deeds and tax lists). Lot 49 appears to be right about where Lake Tara is shown on today's maps. The 1854 tax list shows James Hartsfield, Senior as owning 100 acres in Lot 49. He owned 100 acres in 1852 and 1855 (lot numbers not given) but is shown on Lot 144 in 1857. From what I can glean from an 1825 state map of Georgia and a map of the original Henry County, the boundary between Fayette County and Henry County must have moved east nine miles between 1821 and 1825 to encompass District 13 of the original Henry County in Fayette County. Lot 49 of District 12 would therefore have been in Henry County but abutted Fayette County. It would appear that Phillip FitzGerald's property was in both Fayette and Henry Counties previous to 1858.
James H. Hartsfield and his brother, Davis T. Hartsfield, and their descendants are buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Clayton County.
