I have only Mary C., 17, (born 1833) living with Jonathan as family #598 in the Stanly County census from 1850. Eunice found in research that he'd moved South, she thought possibly to live with his uncle, Leonard Hartsell, in Mississippi in Itiwamba County.
According to Eunice she saw him on a census where he'd been listed as a "school teacher"
Mary C. is believed to have been from the Watts family who lived near Jonathan in Stanly County. Solomon's will listed Jonathan's "heirs" but doesn't name them. Eunice never found a trace of his children and doesn't know how many he had..it's possible you can look for them in a census if you are sure where it is he had settled before going to war (wasn't he killed according to your records?)
Jonathan was born to Solomon, son of John Hartsell and Rosena Horlacher. They are the first Hartsells to settle in NC coming here on a landgrant from Eastern Pennslyvania ..The Smiths and Barbees and Honeycutts were all intermarrying Hartsells at the time as they seemed to be about the only settlers around ..you see lots of Hartsells marrying Smiths, Barbees and Honeycutts.
I believe Sarah's sisters were marrying Solomon's brothers and Hartsell sisters were also marrying Smiths ...I'm not sure about your John Samuel Smith (or John M.) Sallie's parents were named George and Eve. One of their children lived in the home of her grandparents (the Smiths) as she was there with them in the 1850 census. Her name was Elvine and she was 24 at the time..she never married.
I'm going to send all this info to you by email as soon as i find the best way to do so with least amount of effort on my part..it's somewhere in stored archives on one of my email sites or in a computer upstairs..
digging up the files may take awhile..I will probably have to send everything scanned to you from my hard copy files.
Sallie Smith may have been the name of Solomon's wife. Yes, that's it..she was Sallie Smith (real name Sarah) born around 1807, mother of Jonathan.
