I'd like to add some info; maybe it will help someone. Credit for much of this information is due to Deloris Williams and others; Deloris in particular has been very helpful.
My great-grandfather, Henry Whitcomb James (d. 1913) was married to Lula Jane Johnson. HW James's aunt Mary Ann James married James Hartness, and they moved to the Indian Territories in OK sometime between 1884 and 1887. They had a son, Eliga born in NC in 1884, and their youngest child, Ada, was born in OK in 1887. Eliga was noted in census records as marrying a full-blooded Cherokee.
My GGfather's (HW James) sister Lilly Ann married another James Hartness, and I think these folks stayed in NC. In the James line, there was intermarriage for centuries between Native American, African, and European descended families, and the same family and first names repeated endlessly. Makes for a complicated, fascinating mix.
Thanks to Deloris Williams, I have lots of great info on the James line going back, and I'd like to know still more about my ggrandfather's nieces, nephews, cousins and their extended families.
Thanks, Gabrielle Shearer (please feel free to e-mail me, too)
