Tim, Good discussion. I believe that many of the census takers back in the 1850s used the "Ia" to indicate Indiana, although to we in the modern postal age, Ia of course, is our designation for Iowa. I have found this confusion of the "Ia" to be true for several other lines I study and I do know there are many who study genealogy who've assumed the Ia meant Iowa - most in my lines have good evidence to show Indiana was intended. To add some meat to my theory, at least for my Hartley study, I can follow Hester thru all census to 1900 - at least believe it is her - in some censuses she is shown as Hester Ann, and in two is shown as Anna ! - In all but the 1850 & 1870 one she is shown with BP Indiana spelled out completely (1870 shows Ohio). In 1880 & 1900 she is shown as surname Simpson. I have never been able to find Orlando after that 1850 census. He likely went by a different first or middle name or died?... but I've tried lots of angles to find him. I believe that Esther Ann is at Butler Co. 1850 & 60, Warren Co, in 1870 & Champaign Co, Ohio in 1880 & 1900. Now, there is a William Hartley born 1808 (Think I said 1806 before but he is born 1808 and died 1891 at Butler Co). He may be father of Lewis Clarkson. At least William is an adult living with a John, 2 years older in 1850 and Lewis is with them as a child (but with no notation of son or nephew back in 1850). Sadly, I've never been able to find my wife's George W. or his sister, Martha Jane on any 1850 census - but have searched for 25 years, even by browsing page after page thru several Ohio & Indiana counties. We do know that that a Wm. 1808 was at Fountain County, Indiana in the late 1830s, bought land there and his wife, Martha GREGORY died there in 1846. Her gravestone is easily legible there and I have land records that he purchased land there in Fountain Co. in 1837. I've thought for a long time that he probably had an as yet undiscovered brother who went with him to Indiana and who also died there, leaving those kids - Lewis Clarkson Hartley consistently gave his BP as Indiana also, but George & Martha consistently give Ohio. They both died before death certificates were used and their obits are worthless for genealogy. I believe that Wm. moved back to Ohio after his wife died and believe he is the same one living with John & Lewis in 1850. George is listed as G.W. Hartley, a farm hand at Milford Twp, Butler Co, in 1860, living with a man John McLeary, the HOH. In 1840 at Fountain County, Ind. we find William Hartley with people in these age brackets: The parents fit the age groups fine for he and Martha, but the others are confusing: Males: 1 <5 (Orlando?), 1 age 5-9, 1 age 20-29 & Wm. 30-39. Fem. 1<5 (Hester Ann?), 1 age 10-14 & Martha 20-29. George, Martha & Lewis would not have been born yet in 1840. I can't find William in 1830 but assume him young enough to not be a HOH. Currently in my datafiles I show William as father of all five, but I'm skeptical and have absolutely no proof whatsoever that Wm. is father of any of them. I do feel that if he is not their father then he is probably their Uncle. I've not yet gotten a male volunteer to do DNA studies to compare to others. William's male Hartley descendants would have the same Y markers as his brother's but so far I can't find a volunteer from George. Oh, I just remembered one critical piece of evidence - the 1837 land record in Fountain County, Ind. clearly says "William Hartley of Butler Co, Ohio" - Every now and then we genealogists get lucky! I'm happy to send anything to you via Email if you like. - Allan Griffith - magrif@verizon.net
