Hmmm, your group is, indeed, a confusing and difficult one to research...just like my group! In the 1850 Fed Census I see Hester Ann and Orlando living with neighboring families, Orlando with the Kerr family and Hester Ann with the Lites family. However, the Census notes that they were born in Iowa and living in Butler Co., Ohio. Remember that the Census is only as accurate as the person being interviewed the the Census-taker. Even today when I say that I am from Ohio, they hear Iowa! Could it be possible that their parents moved to the newly-opened Iowa territory, some or all of the children were born there and the parents died in Iowa? If the closest living relatives were back in Ohio, the court could have arranged for them to return to Ohio to a relative. It wasn't uncommon then for orphaned children to be placed in indenture to a non-family member for a sum of money to be paid to "the seller". As for Lewis Clarkson Hartley, I find him in the 1880 Census; born in Indiana and married to Margaret with a son, Arthur L (probably Arthur Lewis). I don't know how helpful I've been to you. You've likely already seen everything that I've presented here. I'll keep your group noted here and if I run across anything that helps I'll pass it along to you. Best regards to you, Tim Notify Administrator about this message?
