I don't have Joseph C. Hartley in my records, but note the 1880 census says his father was born in Kentucky. Considering he was born ca. 1815, then his father was born in Kentucky abt 1790. The only Hartley I could find in 1790 was Josiah Hartley on a tax list in Mason County, Kentucky. In 1800 we have a John Hartley in Bourbon County, and a Thomas, and a William Hartley in Fleming County, Kentucky. Another source has a John Hartley in Nelson Co. Kentucky in 1800. Joshua Hartley and Nancy Garrett married 12 May 1790 in Madison Co., Kentucky. There is either a marriage or will of Thomas Hartley in Mercer Co., Kentucky in July 1792. I took a look through my resources and haven't found anything. I hope you can find a death certificate for him with information.
