Thanks for the reply. We may have a connection here.I've made some progress since I posted a year ago.I think the connection is with the Dennis Hartford (born 1858) you mentioned.I think he maybe the brother of my great grandfather John T. Hartford.
I found John T. Hartford's family in theNorfolk, St Lawarence County, New York census for the years 1870, 1880, and 1900 Census'.The 1870 census shows the following:
Thomas Hartford (27) and his wife Isabella (25) along with Richard (17), son;James(25), son; Peter(21), son;Dennis (12), son;Danial(8), son; John (2), son.The first 4 of the six sons were born in Canada, and Danial and John were born in New York.It also shows that Thomas was born in Ireland (along with his parents) and Isabella was born in Canada (both parents were born in Ireland). It appears that this Dennis was born in 1858 which is the same year you have your Dennis being born.
The 1880 census shows only Danial and John living at home, and the 1900 census shows just Thomas and Isabella.
I've recently come upon new information on Thomas.I've been in touch with a lady who is also researching Hartfords and she seems to think my Thomas Hartford is the brother of the person she is looking at.Here is what she shared with me:
Richard Hartford and his wife Ann (Nancy) Kelly Hartford had at least three children that she can verify: Dennis born 1822 in Dublin; James born 1828 in Dublin; and Thomas (She thinks this is my Thomas). They immigrated from Dublin to Montreal around 1832. After Montreal the family moved to Phillipsburg, PQ Canada. Most of this she found in an obituary for James, who died before Dennis and Thomas. I don't have the text of this obituary, but I'm trying to get it.She thinks the first son to move to the US was Dennis. He showed up in the 1850 census in Malone NY (outside of Potsdam). What makes us think this is a connection is that all lived close in St. Lawrence County and of course the names keep recycling. She is looking at Dennis (born 1822 in Dublin). He served in the Civil war and she has a lot of info on him.
The problem I'm having is crossing the border into Canada...I'm not quite sure how to find Canadian records to try to verify this info.
What do you think?
