BERNARD “BARNEY” JEROME HARSTAD, 87, of Worthington, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Montevideo. He married Lois Keifer Nov. 2, 1947.

After graduating high school, he attended Dunwoody Institute to become an electrician. He was then employed by Western Electric before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served four years during World War II, then returned to Western Electric. After marriage, they lived in Minneapolis for two years, then moved to Worthington and began farming. They lived in Sanborn, Iowa, for one year, before returning to Worthington. After retiring, he was a township assessor and courtesy driver for Spomer Motors. He also helped the Reading Senior Citizens and donated time at his church. He was a member of RSVP, Civil Air Patrol and Amateur Radio Club.

Surviving are his wife; four children, Steve Harstad, Don (Nancy) Harstad, Jeri (Bill) Sirovy and Amy (Jim) Stefferud; one sister, Helen; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dingmann Funeral Home, Worthington, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Worthington.

The service will be 10:30 am. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Gordon Orde officiating. Burial with full military honors will be private.
