Glenburn
3515 Runnymede Road
Taneytown, Maryland 21787

BIOGRAPHY: This brick Georgian-style house was built in 1840 by Rogers Birnie on a 250 acre parcel of a larger tract of land called Runnymede Enlarged. This tract was patented before the Revolution by Birnie's great-uncle, Dr. Upton Scott, a prominent physician whose house on Shipwright Street in Annapolis is still a landmark. Birnie and his wife added a small frame wing to the house before they began to operate a boarding school for boys which they called Glenburn. Early in the 20th century, Glenburn was acquired by Joseph A. Goulden, a U.S. Congressman who represented, for many years, the 18th Congressional district of New York. Goulden added several rooms and porches to the wing and built the substantial bridge fording Bear Branch, a lively stream that courses through the spacious lawns and pastures surrounding the house. Glenburn became the first Bed and Breakfast in Carroll County in 1983. Its rooms are richly furnished with heirlooms of the last three centuries. It is conveniently located off of Route 140 between Westminster and Taneytown not very far from the battlefields of Gettysburg and Antietam.
