Harry Families from Wales to PA to SC and Meckleburg NC
From several different sources, "History of the Old Cheraws" and "History of Marlboro Co SC"
In 1701 several Baptists in the conties of Pembroke and Caermarthen in Wales resolved to go to America. There were 16 of them who left Milford Wales in June of 1701 on the ship James and Mary and on the 8th of September they landed in Philadelphia. They stayed at Pennepek for about a year and a half and boundary line changes resulted in that land being in Newcastle Co, Delaware where they built a little meeting house which still stands. More people came from Wales in 1709 and in 1710 the following Baptists were added from several parts of Wales:from Kilcam, Wales: John Philips, Thomas Morris, John Boulton, Richard Edward, Eleanor Philips, Mary Williams, ELIZABETH HARRY, Susanne Owen, Mary Owen, Elizabeth Owen....
In 1736 several members of the church were asked to go to South Carolina and establish a new church on the PeeDee River. They called it the Welch Neck Church.By the latter part of 1737 most of the families from PA/DE were in SC. The members of the church who were asked to go to SC were: Abel Morgan, James James, Thomas Evans, Daniel James, Samuel Wilds, JOHN HARRY, JOHN HARRY, JR. THOMAS HARRY, ELIZABETH HARRY, SARAH HARRY, DAVID HARRY AND CATHERINE HARRY, Jeremiah rowell, Richard Barrow, James Money, Nathaniel Evans, Mary James, Sarah James, Ann Evan, Mary Eilds, Eleanor Jenkins, Margaret Willilam, Mary Rowell, Sarah Barrow, Samuel Evan, Mary Evan, Daniel Devonallt, Thomas James, Philip James, David James, Abel James, Simon Peerson, Mary Boulton, Elizabeth James, Elizabeth Jones, Eleanor James, Mary Hugh and others.
Queensborough Township in SC is where the colony settled. (this area is very near Anson County NC where several Harry families were living in 1755 and in that time frame)
In September 1738 Evan Harry had a land grant in Queensborough, David Harry in 1741. From muster rolls from Gov. Lyttleton's Expedtion against the Cherokees 1759-60: Jacob Harry, John Harry, James Harry, Thoma Harry and William Harry.
Mecklenburg NC was formed from Anson Co. I believe that the
Harrys in Mecklenburg were descendants of these Harrys of the Welch Neck settlement.
