My Aunt and I recently attempted to prove through DAR Matthew Harris Born 12 Jan 1735 in Lancaster Co., PA and died 9 Dec 1819 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Son of Capt. Thomas Harris and Mary McKinney. Matthew married Sutia Stewart on 21 Sept 1758 in Lancaster Co., PA. Our lineage was correct, but unfortunately the DAR wrote me back this letter:
Although Matthew Harris is listed in our Ancestor Database we are no longer accepting applications on the above man. In early days of the society, little or no documentation was required for proof.
Unfortunately the arrest of Matthew Harris in Halifax during the Revolutionary War as a possible spy and his subsequent release when "evidence was obtained from Pictou that he was a peaceful resisent" does not qualify as Patriotic Services.....
Thus in order for Matthew to be considered an active Patriot I have to find further actual proof that he was an American Patriot who added the cause for American liberty. If any of you have strong PROOF of his patriotism please contact me.
