John Harriman was born on 29 Apr 1790 in Kanawha County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia).His father was Shadrach Harriman (born c.1745), who was one of the original settlers of Kanawha County.Shadrach was killed by hostile Indians on Donnally Farm in Kanawha County on 7 Mar 1791, when John was less than a year old.John's mother was Susanna Pryor (born c.1760), who, in 1794, remarried a David Milburn (or Melburn), who became John's stepfather.
John Harriman married Nancy Morris (born 7 Jan 1791) in 1812.They had the following children: Shadrach Morris, John P., Nancy, Joshua, Benjamin, and Sarah.John Harriman died at age 50 on 18 Jul 1840; Nancy lived until 25 Apr 1865.
The second youngest of their children, Benjamin Washington Harriman, was born on 26 Apr 1930 in the family home in Kanawha County (in present-day East Bank, WV - near Charleston).Benjamin married Susan E. Brown of Kanawha County in 1852.They moved to Dakota County, Minnesota in 1854, and remained there for nine years.In 1863 they moved to Cleveland, MN, in LeSueur County.Benjamin served in the First Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, during the tail end of the Civil War and was honorably discharged in July 1865.Later in his life, he served as a county commissioner for LeSueur County.
Benjamin and Susan had the following children: John, William, Charles, Sophia, Levi, James (Howard), Benjamin Jr, and Mary.Benjamin died on 16 Jun 1910 and is buried in Meeker (Scotch Lake) Cemetery near Cleveland, MN.His wife, who survived him by 13 years, is buried beside him.
