William Harris b 1832 Hawkins County Tn

I am finding that my gg grandfather William Harris is spelled Harries on his death certificate. Any suggestions as to why. I also find it Hariss at times. His Civil War file has William Harris b. 1832 Hawkins County Tn and all other family records indicated him born in Va. I think this is due to the county boundary changes. Any info on my William will be greatly appreciated.
