Haven't done much above Virginia on the Harrell family and mainly working on them around Albemarle Sound of North Carolina as early as 1720 and later..
Francis Harrell will filed in 1759 in Bertie North Carolina and proved there in 1763 indicates his wife as Mary...Most have fixed her as Mary Benton from Maryland but nothing has yet been found to verify this as fact.
In the will he lists following chidlren to each get five shilling sterling:
1) son Jacob
2) son John
3) son Francis
4) daughter Sarah Averet (spelling is right for her name)
5) daughter Mary Saulsbury (again spelling of name okay)
6) daughter Eliz Carril (the surname is okay as far a spelling from will but not sure of Eli??? as the final letter in her first name is not all that clear a z or s or ?)
Next he leaves his plantation and home to be split between sons Shadrack and William to it share equal.
Next he leaves a bed and house fruniture to daughter Martha Harrell.
Next he indicates wife Mary to use estate until her death and on her rewed to only get a third of the estate.
Next he indicates all not given out to be equaly divided between Shadrack, William, and Martha...Feel the manner in which he left only five shillings to the others that they not his natural children but probable grand children or even nieces and nephews orphaned for some reason and left in his care.Indications are Francis came from probably Quaker youth so the strong family ties hold for him.
Also have learned that a Thomas Harrill and Francis Farrell arrived in Maryland on board the prison hulk Justitia under Captain Barnet Bond in 1743 from England both had been sentenced for crimes at Gravesend England in 1742 (Francis in Oct and Thomas in Dec)and held for transort to America in April of 1743 arriving around June in Maryland.Figuring the sentence to be a least seven years time in America then by 1750 they were free and able to either return to England or remain in America.Indications are both probably stayed in America.Found in Maryland records a John Farrell noted and source refers from him to a John Harrell so wonder if he changed his name to hide his past and took on the Harrill/Harrell surname from Thomas as indications are Francis Farrell was the elder seasoned criminal compared to probably a young Thomas Harrill when he got caught and sentenced to transport.
Key names in the will of Francis Harrell show up on a land record for a William Freeman in Bertie County North Carolina.Note here that in 1728 Bertie was a precinct of Chowan County North Carolina joining with Nansemond County Virginia and at this time a survey of the NC VA line was done and adjustments made giving NC lands formerly considered in VA...Thomas Harrell shows up in Suffolk City or Nansemond County VA as early as 1755 and late as 1802 holding land and later with wife Martha selling it to a Richard Riddick of Suffolk gathering lands for the town formation. Also in 1721 a Francis Harrell of Nansemond buys land from a James Frye also of Nansemond then sells it 1731 from Nansemond to a person in Chowan then sells more land in 1734/5 only now him from Bertie Precint still to the person in Chowan..This probably because of the time from the actual survey in 1728 and the final settlement of just where the line between NC and VA was in there area.
Still trying to see the actual land records in Chowan County at Edenton dated 1721 where he bought land and then the two in 1731 and 1734 where he sold it to get more details off them.Do know that Francis Harrell only listed three times in the index before 1800 in Chowan but some folks have misread the land records and created other items from only the three there. The 1721 record is in a single book and didn't get to see it on a visit as that book was being repaired but did see the book with the other two 1731 and 1734/35 (two dates as 1734 sale date and 1735 was file date) trouble is only got basics off these deeds when visited now lack the details need to clear up errors created from these records due to them being misread.
