Descendants of FRANCIS HARRELL
Descendants of Francis Harrell
Generation No. 1
1.FRANCIS1 HARRELL was born Abt. 1705 in Nansemond County,Virginia, and died Abt. 1763 in Bertie County, North Carolina. He married MARY BENTON[?].
Notes for FRANCIS HARRELL:
Francis Harrell was born in the early 1700s, for he was a landowner in Nansemond County, Virginia by 1731.
Hathaway’s, North Carolina Register, Vol. II, No. 4, p. 450 [hereafter to be cited as NCR] gives the following deed records:
In 1731, Francis Harrell, of Nansemond County, sold land to John White, of Nansemond County.
19 October 1731:Francis Harrell, of Nansemond County, sold to Richard Baker, 50 acres East side of Northwest Swamp adjoining lands of Richard Parker.Testators:James
Parker, John Arline, and Thomas Rountree.
20 May 1734:Francis Harrell, of Bertie County, North Carolina, to Thomas Baker,50 acres on Middle Swamp.[NCR Vol. III, No. 1, p. 125]
We determine, then, that between 1731 and May 1734 Francis Harrell moved from Nansemond County, Virginia, into the adjoining Bertie County, North Carolina, or that the dividing line was defined between the two states and counties during that time.
Francis Harrell had his Will written 25 March 1759.He appears to have had a lingering illness of up to four years, since he was “weak and sick of body” in March 1759.The Will was filed for probate December 1763.
The Last Will and Testament of Francis Harrell names his wife Mary, sons Jacob, John,Francis, William, and Shadrack. His daughters were Mary Averet, Sarah Saulsbury, Elizabeth Carril (sic), and Martha Harrile.
Apparently, the first three sons and the three married daughters had earlier received their inheritances, since each received only five shillings, a token legacy. The two sons William and Shadrack and their single sister Martha received more substantial inheritances.
Our descent comes through the third son, Francis (II).

Notes for SARAH COLE:
Sarah seems to have been the widow Cole when she married Francis Harrell. Her LWT names her son as "Willass Cole."There is a Bertie Co. marriage record, dated 5 July
1769, for William Cole and Sarah Perry.I do not know whether this is the same Sarah Cole who married Francis Harrell.

Notes for JACOB HARRELL:
Jacob Harrell and Eunice Howard were married in Mobile County in 1825.Their name appears only on the Marriage Register Index, the Marriage Record being no longer extant.
Jacob patented federal land near the town of Citronelle in 1839, adjoining the patented land of Axeth Howard.
The family of Jacob Harrell appears on the census listings of 1830 and 1840 in Mobile County. In the listings of 1850 and 1860, however, Eunice is listed as head of household,
and it is from these listings that the names and Approximate ages of the children are known.Since the last child was born about 1847, it is reasonable to suppose that Jacob died between 1847 and 1850.
