According to the book "Robert Wharton & his Descendents", available through the LDS, the James A. Harrah who married Mary Wharton (d, 1839) was a cousin of the John Neal Harrah who married Helen Wharton in 1834.

I think this could be correct since I have tracked John Neal Harrah through several censuses and do not see a son James. However the Wharton book attributes a son James "who died of snakebite". Perhaps he died young.

It is certain that John Neal Harrah did have a son Frank Harrah, the one who founded Harrah,OK.

I have John Neal Harrah (1810-1895) and wife Helen as living in Il, MO, and then back to IL.

In the 1840 census for Morgan Co. OH, there is a James Harrah household and nearby, a John N, Harrah household, Two doors down from John lived Henry Wharton. I believe this is the household of John Neal Harrah & Helen Wharton.

Further, I think that John Neal Harah was likely the son of Alexander Harrah (1779-1859) and Jane Neal, They were in Belmont Co., OH.

Alexander Harrah was the twin brother to Jmaes Gilchrist Harrah, an ancestor of William Fisk Harrah (Harrah's casinos) for whom there are postings on this forum,

To sum it up, it looks to me more likely that tour anccestor James Harrah, married to Mary Wharton was more likely a cousin or brother to John Neal Harrah than a son. If he had the middle initial "A" as the Wharton book suggests, his name may have been James "Alexander" Harrah.
