I was under the impression that Melissa, the daughter of Willoughby Harney, had died young. I show her birth as 1855 and death 1852, age 2. She is not listed with the family on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Also she was not mentioned in Willoughby's will, while all the other children are mentioned. See my notes on Willoughby that follow:

WILLOUGHBY HARNEY (1812-1870)
Born in Bourbon county, Kentucky on 20 January 1812, the son of Roland Harney and Sarah (Cottrell/Cotrile). Willoughby married Mahala Herrington, on 7 March 1837, in Harrison County, Kentucky, and they had twelve children: William Granville (b.1838); John Roland (b.1839); Nancy (Mrs. Elijah) BARDEN; Willoughby (b.1842); Thomas Jefferson (b.1843); Sarah A. (Mrs. Elias) WESTFALL; Eliza J. (b.1848); James C. (b.1850); George R. (b.1853); Melissa, who died in infancy (1855-1857); Olive (b.1858 d.<1860); and Orville Glasco Harney (b.1858). The four oldest sons: John R; Thomas J; William Granville; and Willoughby, all served on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War. Willoughby Harney Sr. died in 1870, in Kentucky. The following is an abstract from his will, filed in Harrison county, KY:
Property on Main Licking River, and Crooked Creek. My wife Mahala Harney. My children: Wm. Granville; John Roland; Willoughby; Nancy W. Burden, late Nancy Harney; Thomas Jefferson; Sally Ann Westfall, late Sally A. Harney; and James Harney, 40 acres of land each, except James who gets sixty by paying of eight dollars on the first of November 1869. One horse 5 head of sheep and some hogs, house hold and kitchen furniture, all I intend to give them leaving the remainder for my wife's younger children: George and Orville, therefore I give them in this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath to my two younger sons, George and Orville, one hundred and twenty acres of land, a part of my home farm, to be divided equally between them. George 60 acres on the west end, and Orvill the remainder. Also to George and Orville I direct to be given to them one horse, 5 sheep, hogs, household and kitchen furniture, makeing them equal with my other children. I appoint my wife Mahala Harney Executrix of this my last will and testament, 7th day of August 1869. Signed/Willoughby Harney.

Did your source say that had a record that showed their Melissa was a Harney?
