Janet, wrong Ingles rescue! In 1782 (some books erroneoulsy say 1787) Thomas Ingles' family was captured by the Indians from where they lived in Burke's Garden in what is now present-day Tazewell County.(This, BTW, is the same Thomas Ingles who was captured in the Mary Ingles incident earlier.)It was while trying to rescue Thomas Ingles' family that Thomas Maxwell was killed.
I've found that the spelling of name "Harman"/"Harmon" was anything but consistent, though I will agree that most of the time the descendants of Heinrich Adam and Jacob Herrmann did use the "Harman" spelling. There are lots of old primary records in SW VA that refer to the Harman family as "Harmon" (and just about any other phonetic spelling variation you can think of).
For what it is worth, I've now narrowed my list of possible candidates for the father ofRebecca (Harman?) Maxwell-Hays down to either: 1) Matthias Harman (son of Adam), or 2) Jacob Jr. (son of Jacob Sr.), but so far I have not been able to move the chances beyoung the possibility stage.
