SW VA Harmon/Harman-Maxwell Connections
I'm posting this in the hope that out there somewhere someone will see the same possibility that I do and can point me closer to the answer.
About 1772-1774 Thomas and James Maxwell, brothers, moved down to the area of what became Tazewell County, and more specifically near the headwaters of the north branch of the Clinch River.James was already married, but it appears that Thomas married after the move.By about 1778 Thomas had married Rebecca (???), so I'm guessing that Rebecca had been born ca. 1762, or before.Thomas was killed by Indians while trying to rescue the Ingles girls in 1782, leaving his wife a widow and two small daughters - Mary and Sarah Maxwell. In the time that Thomas lived in the Clinch River valley it is well-documented his many interactions with the Harman/Harmon clan, and in fact I find Harmans interacting with the same Maxwell family in earlier Augusta and Botetourt County records.
(BTW, on the Internet you will find people claiming that Thomas and Rebecca had two sons, but after extensive searching for anything with which to verify this claim I have found nothing.I think it is just more Internet genealogy noise.)
By 1786 Rebecca (???) Maxwell had remarried to John Hays, and the family moved to Wilson County, Tenn.Rebecca's first son was named Harman A. Hays.Furthermore, her only surviving daugher from the Maxwell marriage, Sarah, who married Newitt Drew, named a son Harmon Atkins Drew.
The fact that both Rebecca and her daughter named a son Harman/Harmon, plus the close relationship between the Maxwell and Harman/Harmon families in SW Virginia, strongly suggests to me that Rebecca's maiden name was Harman or Harmon. But whose daughter could she possibly have been?I could use any and all help in solving this riddle - anything that might vector me closer to the answer would be most appreciated.
