NANCY (NEAL) HARMON - wife of George Harmon
Grandmother Harmon (Nancy Neal) one day, in Greene County, Tennessee, saw a large group of Indians approaching her home. They stopped some distance from her house and an Indian woman got down off her horse and went down into a sinkhole. All the Indians moved on, leaving the woman alone. Thinking that she might be sick, grandmother went out to see if she needed help, but found she was just waiting for her baby to be born. Grandmother went back to her house to get some food for the woman, this was good venison stew. The woman ate it and then got busy with her work at hand. After the baby was born, the mother picked it up, climbed out of the sinkhole and went to the river. She waded in and gave the baby its first bath. Next day the Indians returned. When they learned that grandmother had fed the woman, they made a speech and promised that she and her family would never be harmed by them. They took the woman and baby and rode off.
[A story as told by Susan (Kelsay) Rankin, daughter of William and Barthena (Harmon) Kelsay to her granddaughter Bella Vaughn; Written by Tom Goldrup, P.O. Box 425, Ben Lomond, CA 95005.]
