…”you stated that Thomas was her uncle…” Answer: This was an error. I had cut & pasted from my notes section that was written BEFORE I found the will naming John as her father. I’m sorry for the confusion. I don’t know what relationship Thomas was to Milly, since we don’t know who the father of John Harmon (b.1749 VA-d.bef. 3 Nov 1838 Greene Co., TN) was. That is to say, we don’t know who Millys’ grandfather was. “…why (would) Peter and Thomas Harmon…both need to sign a Bastard bond…?” Answer: I went to the Cox Historical Library in Greeneville, TN. The original suit says, “1796 May term Common Pleas Court, page 442. Thomas Harmon enters into bond with Peter Harmon his Securities in the sum of $1000. for the maintenance of a bastard child born of Mary Lester.” The Librarian said Thomas was the one being sued as the father of the baby. Peter went security on the bond of Thomas, guaranteeing IF Thomas did not pay the support, that he Peter would pay it. The purpose being that the child would not become a ward of the court. The Librarian also stated $1000. would have bought at least 1000 acres of land in Greene Co., TN in 1796, and it would be very unlikely for anyone other than a father to go that high a bond.. “Could Thomas Harmon be Peters Brother not son and Milly's father John also be their brother?” Answer: Since we have no positive proof Peter is the parent, such as a will, it is always possible. However, I find it very improbable since we have the above mentioned paternity suit. Notify Administrator about this message?
