I have researched the Harleys tracing to John and Mary Cleland Harley for months and the SINGLE source for the family oral history that we are related to Sir Robert seems to be the family scroll compiled by Erskine Polk Harley and others around the 1930's.

The oral tradition was also noted in newspaper articles around that time about William Roberts Harley, John's Harley's grandson.

I've contacted several other people who claimed to be "family researchers" and have gotten nothing but this oral claim. After thoroughly researching Sir Robert, who is from a line of one and two sons in the family for a couple of generations, this seems implausible.

I find merit in message #340 that the time that we know the family was in Ireland just doesn't match up unless it's quite a distant connection back between one of John's ancestors and one of Robert's ancestors.

Anyone with any sourced material, please email me! I'd like to put the family rumors to the test. Am working on a book and won't print anything unsourced. Or at least remotely plausible!
