Andrew Harkness and Janet Penman, Scotland to Kendall Co., IL
In the Summer 2007 issue of AAFA ACTION, the Alford American Family Association's quarterly, we are publishing a 15-page family history narrative written by Jacob Andrew Alford, son of Andrew Alford and Betsy Harkness. Betsy, born 1828 in Scotland, was the daughter of Andrew Harkness and Janet Penman. Andrew and his family left Scotland for New York in 1840. By 1849 they were in Kendall Co., IL, where Betsy met and married Andrew Alford.
Jacob Andrew Alford had extensive contact with his Harkness relatives. He names them and provides much detail about their lives. Anyone who is descended from this family will find much of interest here, including an excerpt from Betsy Harkness Alford's sister Isabella's 1850 diary.
Jacob knew very little about his Alford relatives, who were Norwegian, but he relates what he does know of them, their origin and immigration. His father was born in 1836 in Stavanger, Norway, leaving in 1855 and arriving eventually in Kendall Co., IL.
I have this family story as a Word document and can email upon request. AAFA may also post it to its website in the future.
Note:A 400+ page genealogy of this family is THE DESCENDANTS OF ANDREW AND JANNETTE PENMAN HARKNESS OF ROXBURGHSHIRE, SCOTLAND by Elmer George Dickson, 1990. A copy is located in the library at Fort Wayne, IN. Mr. Dickson's address is: 2384 Kennedy Ave, Chico, CA 95973. The family history by Jacob Andrew Alford is not included in the genealogy.
