Hi Neil,
I think that James Hargreaves b @1822 in Padiham married Jane Anderton in 1849.These people are a strong probability for the parents of John Thomas b 1853.
The James Hargreaves from the 1841 census occ M S which means Male Servant is probably not "yours",as his occuption does not really fit with a cotton weaver/dyer/printer job that is shown on later census returns.

There is an entry for James Hargreaves age 25,wife Jennet age 25 on the 1841 both are cotton weavers living in Padiham
