Ursula Hargrave, b. Virginia 1807
Hello Hargrave researchers!
My g-g-g-grandmother was Ursula Hargrave Gray, born in Virginia. This information was on her daughter Lucy Ann Gray Stout Palmer's death certificate.
From census information, she was born around 1807. On the 1880 census form, she says her parents were also born in Virginia.
Ursula Hargrave married Axum Gray on August 26, 1831, according to the 1892 military pension filed through her son, the deceased Henry Clay Gray, who died in the Civil War.
Axum Gray lived in Northampton Co., North Carolina; the marriage may have taken place there, but there are no records to support this.
Their older children were born in Northampton Co.: Richard Thomas, Lucy Ann, b. 1837; Mary Jane, b. 1839; William Eli (may have been Ellis), b. 1840; and Martha, b. 1841.
In 1842, Axum and Ursula Hargrave Gray moved to Ohio (county unknown as yet, but believed to be in the southwestern part of the state). Two sons were born in Ohio, Henry Clay, 1844; and Carlisle, 1846. Both would later die in the Civil War.
In 1848, Axum and Ursula Hargrave Gray moved to Grant Co., Indiana. Their youngest child, Andrew, was born in Grant Co. in 1849.
Their migration pattern suggests Quaker ties. They seemed to be associated or related to the large Nelson and Taylor families who settled in Grant Co. even before daughters Martha married Jonas Nelson and Mary married Mills Taylor.
In the 1850 census, the Hargraves found in Northampton Co., North Carolina include Richard (b. 1802) Thomas (b. 1810), and Lemuel (b. 1812), Leticia, Mary, Margaret,Elizabeth and Sarah. These females seem to be unmarried sisters living with unmarried brother Lemuel. Also in this household is Lucy Lane.
There are Lanes, Powells, Jordans and Cornwalls living nearby.
Does anyone know where my Ursula fits in, or anything about these Northampton Co., North Carolina Hargraves?
