Hello Ray, It is pretty evident that Richard was married twice: first to Mary Jones by whom he had two children; second to Jane "Jeanne" Jacobs Long, most likely a widow, by whom he had his six additional children. It has been speculated that Benjamin Jacobs was married to a Hargis, probably a sister to Richard. (We can only account for five children of Abraham and Elizabeth, and all of them were men) Benjamin was married to a much younger woman, Nancy Simpson, of the Caswell County Simpsons, but according to my research could not have been the mother of any of his children. She married second to my ancestral uncle, William Fox, and was born ca. 1809, according to census records. It would not be out of order to validate Benjamin's in-law relationship to Richard, since Benjamin did witness Richard's will ca. 1800. The Jacobs and Hargis families did live in proximity to each other. Richard's parents were Abraham Hargis and Elizabeth Nalley, not Halley. The Nalley name was sometimes written as Knolley. The stories which have circulated about Jane Jacobs being of American Indian descendancy cannot be validated by any application she might have made for any monies which might have come to her allocated for people of Cherokee heritage, as there were many people who could have "passed" for Indians, were not necessarily approved for that allotment. I know of at least one of my Fox cousins who lived in Calhoun County, Ga, in the Cherokee land area, who applied for the same consideration. She was not approved, and rightly so, as there is no American Indian connection in my Fox family. Most likely the Jacobs were of French or Huguenot heritage, and would have possessed the olive complexion and dark hair which is often a characteristic of the French Huguenots. I love oral family history, but we have to be careful that we do not allow it to "color" our legitimate heritage. The romance of the exotic added to our family history does make for interesting reading, but should be verified by legitimate documentation before we place it in the realm of truth. I am a descendant of Richard's brother, Shadrack Hargis. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
