1676 Will of John Hardy
THE JOHN THAT WROTE THE WILL of 1676
1. Was married to the grandmother of John Johnson, who appears in the Will of 1676 as “my wife’s grandchilde.”
2. Was the grandfather of Hardy Driver, who appears in the Will of 1676 as “my grandchild Hardy Driver the daughter of Giles Driver.”
3. Was the father of Olive Hardy, born 1648, and the same Olive that married Giles Driver, John Bromfield and John Pitt.
4. Was born before 1630
Alice Tucker, not Alice Bennett, is the grandmother of John Johnson. There is no "widow Johnson." Alice Tucker was the widow of Arthur Allen (d. 1669)in Surry Co, VA. Katherine Allen born c.1645, the youngest child of Alice Tucker and Arthur Allen, married Robert Johnson. John Johnson born c.1658 was their son; thus “my wife’s grandchilde” mentioned in John Hardy's 1676 Will.
Alice Hardy gave her power of attorney to her son-in-law, William Mayo, on May 11, 1681. John Johnson was a witness. (Wm. Mayo was named by John Hardy in the Will of 1676 as “my son-in-law”)
Alice Tucker's birth year, if correct, makes it unlikely she was married to John Jr., born c. 1635-37.
Alice Bennett is not "the widow Johnson." There is no "widow Johnson."
The mother of Hardy Driver is Olive Hardy, born 1648, and married Giles Driver (d. aft Dec 1676); John Bromfield (d. 1679); and John Pitt (d. 1703). All three are mentioned in John Hardy'd Will of 1676.
Olive Hardy, born 1648, married Giles Driver (d. aft Dec 1676); John Bromfield (d. 1679); and John Pitt (d. 1703). John Pitt was a widower with children when he and Olive married.
Olive Bromfield deposed in 1679 on the death of her husband, John Bromfield, that she was age 31. "John Bromfield - dying intestate, administration requested by his relic, Oliffe, in behalf of his orphans. (recorded 9 Feb. 1680)
John Pitt's wife, the relic of Mr. Giles Driver, gave her daughter Hardy five sheep, one young mare &e, warranting said mare to her the said Hardy Driver. ("Isle of Wight, VA Records, Deed 8," Jul 1680)
Will of John Pitt mentioned "Daughter-in-law (step-daughter) Ann Bromfield her father John Bromfield's estate. (Isle of Wight, VA Will and Deed Book 2, p. 454)
The Will of John Pitt’s son, Robert Pitt, named "my father-in-law (stepfather) Andrew Monro and Uncle Henry Pitt Exors." (Jul 10, 1711)
Olive's Will (proved May 31, 1725) names Robert Pitt's grandson, Robert. It also names John, Henrietta, Sara, Mary Monro, the children of Rev. Andrew Monro and his first wife, Mary Smith.
Olive was born 1648. (To my knowledge this is the only birth year that has been proven. Birth years for John Sr and John Jr and all the children are estimates) If Olive's father was age eighteen or older at her birth, he would have been born 1630 or sooner. John (Sr) was born c. 1613. John (Jr) was born c. 1635-37.
I believe the above supports that John Hardy Sr wrote the Will of 1676, and he was NOT the John Hardy who died in 1670 as reported by John Johnson. I propose that the inventory presented by John Johnson was for John Hardy Jr., who had predeceased his father.
Any input on the subject is appreciated.
