Hardy line 1812+ Kent. to Webb City, Mo./Myers

My family line follows the branch from Kentucky eventually to Webb City (Jasper Co.), Mo., from the early 1800s to our generation.

This Solmon Hardy (b. 1732) is in my family tree, which continues with his son Arnold Hardy (1760-1833), who wed Barbara Devilbiss Flemming and came to KY about 1819. (Of course, Devilbiss was the weird Americanized version of her family surname from (Woerth) Alsace, France; her ancestors (10-year-old Casper Deibellbissin/Deibellbisin (originally Teufelbess) came to America from Alsace in 1731 on the Britannia of London ship out of Rotterdam. (Flemming was Barbara's name from her 1st marriage; Devilbiss was her maiden name).

(I'll digress momentarily to give you some official details on the above people. Solomon HARDY was born ABT. 1732 in Prince Georges Co., MD. He wed Rachel LIVERS, who was born ABT. 1741 in Prince Georges Co., MD, and died 22 FEB 1822 in Scott Co., KY. She was the daughter of Arnold LIVERS and Mary Ann DRANE.
Children of Rachel LIVERS and Solomon HARDY are: i. Arnold HARDY was born 17 AUG 1760 in Prince Georges Co., MD, and died 10 NOV 1833 in Ralls Co., MO. He married Barbara DEVILBISS 5 APR 1782 in Frederick Co., MD. ... End of digression.)

Anyway, my line goes through Casper Hardy (1788-1872), son of Arnold and Barbara. This Casper married Elizabeth McAtee in 1811. Then my line continues with their son, Joseph Arnold Hardy (b 1/12/1812 in Scott Co. Kent), who wed Julia Anna Gardner in 1831. (I think her sister married the famous pioneer Daniel Boone; does anyone have the specifics on the Gardner tree that links to THE Daniel Boone?) Julia died June 12, 1899, but I don't know where she died or is buried, do you? ... Joseph Arnold Hardy then moved to Missouri, where the rest of the family stayed for generations in and around Webb City, Mo. (near Joplin). He died Jan. 16, 1879 in Joplin, Mo., in Jasper County. (The records say Joplin-Jasper, so I assume that's what it means; Joplin is in Jasper Co., but there also is a Jasper (town), Mo. in the area, but I don't think they lived there.) Perhaps Julia also died around Joplin.

Here's a Jasper Co. historical bio on the next run of my family tree. It concerns Joseph Allen Hardy, son of Joseph Arnold and Julia ... (I found it at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rslewis/bios/Bio/Bio237.htm#JHardy) I heard my grandmother talk about the tree this far up, so it's all confirmed.

J. ALLEN HARDY.

Among those who have shown business talent in the developing of the mining interests of Webb City is J. Allen Hardy, who was born near Hannibal, Missouri, August 15, 1840. His parents were Joseph and Julia Ann (Gardner) Hardy, the former of whom was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, January, 1812, and the latter in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1810. The paternal grandfather was Casper Hardy, a man of means and prominence in his locality.
In 1846 J. Allen Hardy removed with his parents to Lafayette county, Wisconsin, and grew to manhood in the town of Shullsburg, where, at the age of fourteen, he began to work in the lead and zinc mines, continuing until 1873. At that date he removed to Jasper county, Missouri, where he continued his labors in the lead and zinc mines, becoming thoroughly familiar with every detail of this business. In 1882 Mr. Hardy came to Webb City and opened up what was known as the Hardy & Lillibridge mine, which was sold to good advantage in 1891.
The next contract taken by Mr. Hardy was the development of the Richland tract, and this was finally sold to the Richland Mining Company. For several years he mined the Duenweg property where he continued for four years and then disposed of his interests there and bought a lease of the Portertract, later selling to the Cordell Lead & Zinc Company, of which he is the president and manager. He also owns property in Moniteau county, Missouri, which is being developed.
Mr. Hardy was married, in 1862, to Miss Emily Edstrom, who was a daughter of Paul Edstrom, of Boston, Massachusetts, and to this marriage have been born four sons and six daughters: Harriet, wife of James McKanna, of Joplin; Mary, who is the wife of Dr. Tyree, of Webb City; George, who lives in Webb City; Alice, who is the wife of George Burgner, of Joplin; Catherine; Anna, who is the wife of Benjamin C. Aylor, of Webb City; J. Allen, Jr.; Thomas; Agnes, who is a student in a convent; and Herbert.
In politics Mr. Hardy adheres to the gold wing of the Democratic party. Socially he is connected with the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and he is a director in the Mine Producers' Association. His life has been one of prominence in mining circles and he is regarded as one of the most reliable authorities in that line in htis rich mineral district. His opinion is very often asked and taken, as his judgment has proved of great value to those who have had the greatest financial interests placed in this locality.

Then, the tree continues with Joseph Allen Hardy's son, George of Webb City, Mo. George was my great grandfather. Here's a historical Jasper Co. bio on George ... (I found the bio at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rslewis/bios/Bio/Bio317.htm)

GEORGE HARDY.

One of the most straightforward, energetic and successful business men of Jasper county is George Hardy, who has attained prominence in mining circles. He is a son of J. Allen and Emily (Edstrom) Hardy, who make their home at Webb City. In 1874 George Hardy, our subject, came with his father to Jasper county, where he has ever since engaged in mining pursuits, and his well-directed efforts and wise judgment have secured for him a leading position in the business circles of his locality. He is now serving
as superintendent of the Cordell Mining Company, which is operating on the Porto Rico lands, and of which his father is the president and manager. Three of his brothers, Allen, Tom and Herbert, are also interested in the company. Mr. Hardy has also opened up and developed many other rich and paying mines, among them being the Duenweg and the Jack, the last named being located at Lehigh.
Mr. Hardy was united in marriage with Miss Maggie Cochran, of Newton county, Missouri, and they have five children,—Clara, Margaret, George, Charles and Helen. Mr. Hardy has been engaged in mining operations since his fifteenth year, and Ins long connection with the development of the rich mineral resources of the state has made him very proficient in his chosen line of work. He is an upright and reliable citizen, true to all the duties of business and private life, and his sterling worth has gained him high regard.

My grandmother was George's daughter, Helen Elizabeth Hardy (b Feb. 3, 1901, in Webb City, Mo., d. Oct. 6, 1997, in Kansas (I think in Shawnee Mission). (She lived in Webb City her entire life, where she was a huge civic leader, Missouri Mother of the Year, president of the Business & Professional Women, etc. She only died in Kansas because she was received health care there.) This Helen Elizabether Hardy married my grandfather, William Claude Myers Sr. on March 10, 1920. William Claude Myers sr. was b Aug. 10, 1895 and d. Oct. 20, 1952 in Webb City, Mo.). Helen and William Sr. (whom she called "Claude") had six children: William Claude Jr., Helen, Max (Maximillian), Robert P., Mary Margaret, and John Frederick (all Myers, of course). The eldest child was my father, William C. Myers Jr. (who used that formal name or "Bill"); he was born March 30, 1921, in Monett, Mo., and died May 6, 1983, in Joplin (at a hospital near Webb City. He spent his entire life in Webb City, Mo., was a leading citizen and revered as a great man. (I need to fill this out better later and will!)

William Jr. (my father) married Juanita Carlyn Merryman (known as "Carlyn) on July 5, 1947. (Carlyn was b. Jan. 15, 1927 and now resides in St. Louis, Mo.) Her parents were Juanita Reese (Merryman) and Lewis C. Merryman, formerly of St. Michaels, Venton and Salisbury, Md. (The Reese side of the family centers in St. Michaels, Md.) William C. Myers Jr. was a decorated WWII bomber pilot (flying Libertor planes from England over Germany), graduated from Univ. of Mo. Law School after the war, became a very prominant attorney in Mo., became president of the University of Missouri Board of Curators (serving on the board several terms), etc. He and Carlyn had 5 daughters: Lisa Merryman Myers, Lynn Elizabeth Myers (aka Houston), Leslie Reese Myers, Gretchen Hardy Myers (wed Daniel J. Godar), and Ann Catherine Myers (wed Mark Hagemeister). Dad spent his life in Webb City and we all grew up there. Mom (Carlyn), Gretchen, Ann and I finally settled in St. Louis, Mo. My grandmother ("Granny") (Helen Elizabeth Hardy Myers) said my sisters and I were the fifth generation to have grown up in Webb City in the family line, which of course started with Joseph Arnold Hardy (b 1/12/1812, who moved to Webb City from Kentucky. We still have cousins in Webb City and Joplin named both Myers and Hardy. (We also have Myers cousins mostly around Kansas City, Mo. and Kans., and the Southwestern U.S.) But our exact branch of the family tree no longer is there. Carlyn and the late William Jr. now have 5 grandchildren growing up in Greater St. Louis, Mo. (children of Gretchen and Ann). Lisa is in Washington D.C. and Lynn is in Santa Barbara, Calif.

If anyone can help me with details about any of this tree, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Leslie Myers
