I think my best answer is "maybe."
He fits in some ways:
1. In the later censuses his parents are listed as being born in AL. As far as I know, father John was born in GA and mother Eliza was born in AL.
2. His children's names are in the family pattern: Nancy, John, Elizabeth, Henry (though usually John Henry), and Mary are all Helton family names--also the names of many other families.
3. His grandparents Mattie and Joseph Helton and his father John Hardy came from GA, so he probably had distant kin there.
4. It looks to me, though I have no direct proof, that Eliza Helton Hardy died between 1870 and 1878 because I found her childrenWilliam and (Mary) Alice in Bibb County as servants to William Forud (sp?), Orphans often went to other households like that. Nancy Hardy required the permission of her uncle Allen R. Helton in order to marry in 1878 in Bibb County.
5. I haven't found John Hardy anywhere else, although I haven't really looked.
As I get time and inclination, I'll look into this a little more. Otherwise, you have most of my info from my earlier post.
Good luck.
