In checking the Vermont census data for Highgate, Franklin Co., I find:
1790John Clow
1800John Clow
1810John Clow
1820Andrew Clow
1830no Clow listed in Highgate
1840C.R. Clow
1850Mariah Clow (age 19)
1860Andrew Clow, wife Mary and 5 kids
1870Maria Clow (age 35b. Canada)
There are obviously missing entries, probably where the name was mispelled or mis-transcribed.
From that it would seem that the original Clow in Highgate had to be John Clow Sr.Your John was his son?Andrew was John's brother? And who the heck was C.R. Clow?Another brother?I have come across mention of a Charles Clow in the area, but have no futher info.
Most of the Clows of that area that I have come across originated in the Upper Hudson river area of NY State. Most were Dutch or German and the name may have originally been spelled as Klauw or Clauw.
Will watch out for your Clows as I go along.Meanwhile, keep in mind -the more info you get the more the confusion level rises!
