Notes for Thomas Harbour:
From WFT CD#136
All of the Harbours we know anything about who live anywhere in the United States are descended from Thomas
Harbour, who is believed to have been born in Wales about 1690 (over 300 years ago), and who came to Virginia
in some manner as a young man. About 1725, he married Sarah Witt of French Hugenot ancestry. They owned
land and lived at various places in eastern Virginia until about 1750.
In 1753, he acquired 354 acres of land on the North Mayo River and along the North Carolina line in what
was at that time Halifax County, but which is now Henry Coounty. So far as we know, he lived there until his
death and is probably buried somewhere on that land.
Also, as early as 1753, Thomas Harbour was granted land on Smith River and Sycamore Creek in Patrick
County, and was one of the earliest persons to receive land in that part of the County. It is not likely that Thomas
ever lived on any of this land, but some of his sons did live there. Sycamore Creek was probably the land where
David and Richard Harbour later lived, and probably included at least a part of Abner's Ridge, which is believed
to have been named for him. It may have included the land where Moses Harbour later lived which was farther up
the creek and would have included the land on which the Old Harbour Cemetery is located.
Notes from "Antecedents of Willian Sidney Harber " by Thomas W. Harber, November, 1958, Dallas, Texas
Emigration: Thomas Harbour was a native of the rugged country of Wales and responding to the call of
opportunity offered in the New World which were unknown in the Old World, made his way to Virginia and
settled on land lying on the Mayo River near State Line in Lunenburg Co., now Patrick County, Virginia. See
"Patrick and Henry Counties Virginia", 1933 ed. by Virginia and Lewis Pedigo, page 157.
Charles Witt ( 1710-1781 ), who married Lavina Harbour, was the son of Guillame Witt, ( b 1675 in France d
1754 in Virginia ), and was a Huguenot refugee. It is assumed that Sallie Witt, Wife of Talmon Harbour was a
daughter of Guillame Witt. We do not have any Records on this point.

Hubbart,Arber,Arbor,Harber, so it is difficult to follow the family line further. Mistakes were made in spelling
and interpretation:
ex:1745 Albemarle Co. Deed, Thomas Harbour transcribed as Thomas Harcourt.
1777 Henry Co. "Oath of Allegiance",Thomas Harbour transcribed as Thomas Hubbart.
In the 1400's the Harbours may have had control of Raglan Castle in Wales. It was contolled by the Earl of
Pembroke, William "Herbert" , believed to be Harbour."

The above information was contained in a letter from William T. Ross, dated 21 jan 1981, to Mabel
Groskey of Oregon. He was doing research for her. I have copies of her research, she is deceased. We are
related through the Whiteman, Harbour, Witt, Packard, Daux, and Noland lines.
Mr. Ross also included this handwritten information:
"Talmon Harbour is shown on page 311-Vol. VII (Compendium of American Genealogy, Vicus) as the
son of Thomas Harbour who patented 400 acres of land in Goochland, Co., VA., 1734. It is also stated in
this item that he lived 1718 to 1797 and spent the last few years of his life in Franklin, County, Georgia.
This statement is in error. There is no evidence that he ever lived in Franklin Co., Georgia. (His son
Esaias did live there) and recent research indicates that he (Talmon) was born about 1730 (not 1718).
Further, and the most convincing evidence is a deed in Patrick County, Virginia, Deed Book 5 pages 391
& 392 (renumbered 401 and 402) dated 29 May 1820. This deed is from Talmon Harbour of Pactrick
Co., to John Harbour, "Grandson of the said Talmon Harbour" of the same county. ---"for love, goodwill
and affection and one dollar" ---deeded 607 acres on Goblintown Creek, also "one gray mare, household
effects, kitchen furniture and plantation untensils" to the said John Harbour---. Recorded August Court
1820.
apparently his grandson, John, looked after him in his old age and it refutes the statement that he lived
his last few years in Georgia and died in 1797.
Therefore Talmon lived from 1730 to at least 1820."

Willaume De Witt:
Buried beside wife in St. Ann's Parish Churchyard. Name and records of wife are not known. The De
Witt, or Witte family belonged to a strong Protestant group of Christians that had grown up in France
known as Huguenots. Louis XIV, a Roman Catholic, was subjecting the Huguenots to cruel persecutions,
so to escape oppression or possible death at the hands of the Romanists, Willaume (later William) De
Witt fled from France to England, and in 1699 he came from England to America to the Huguenot
Colony at Manakin Town, Powhatan County, Virginia.
It is thought he married after reaching Virginia. Name of wife not known, she died about 1741, it is
thought ----
WFT 1-1060 indicates that "William Witt" son of John Witt and Ann Daux was married to a
"Mary/Milfred".
Notes from WFT #16-2484: The first Witts in the U. S. may have been William, John or Edmund Witt or
Whitt who survived the Indian attacks in 1622. Edmund lived near Jamestown and William lived at
Chapline's Choise near Hopewell and Charles City Co., Virginia.
8
Willaim Witt, born in France as Guilliaume DeWitt in 1675. As a Huguenot refugee he was taken as a
boy to England where he was known as Gilliam De Witt. In 1699 at the age of 24 he came to Virinia
