My mother (1901-93) was descended from William Harbottle (second child and eldest son of William and Grace H). He seems to have been born on 10 Apr.1816 (tho I have temporarily lost my ref. for this). His 1861 census entry says that he was born at Cleasby (near Darlington), but this connection seems to have been brief for the family continued closely connected with Billingham, where his 3 brothers and 1 further sister were born. William's second son was William James (b. 13 Apr.1849), my grandfather. It is of course unusual to be still alive with a grandfather of such early date. The reason is that WJ married at least twice, and he was already 51 when my mother was born in 1901. He moved to the Manchester area c.1870, and first married there in 1873. My mother never knew of her Australian links through her great uncle, Thomas H.
